Jocelyn Rainey

Jocelyn passionately believes that art is the true soul food of life. Hear how and why Jocelyn changed the course of her life from mowing lawns for the city to earning a masters degree in art education.

Her willful determination convinced inner city high school boys that art is cool, changing their lives with a field trip to see the Mona Lisa in Paris. There were a number of trips afterward for future students: Spain to see Picasso, Eqypt to see the pyramids, and Japan.

Her most recent distinction was an invitation to Washington to speak to Congress in support of the importance and the value of art education for teaching active minds how to make a positive difference in the world. Not bad for a girl from the “hood.” Detroit stands tall because of people like Jocelyn Rainey.
